e-learning: Intrinsic Motivation Learning Design

e-learning: Intrinsic Motivation Learning Design: "Up until recently, the concept of external motivators has worked well enough for schools and universities who use the lure of certification to ensure that most of their students apply themselves and attain the institutions’ requirements for a qualification. But what about the intrinsic motivational factors that can be found in some students? Is it possible that these could be more powerful drivers for student performance?"

Faculty Resistance: ELearning & Higher Education

FacultyResistanceELearning:
During my sabbitcal leave I have been actively doing research regarding E-learning (which sometimes goes by the name term online learning.) Part of this research has been involved in searching the literature concerned with why and how teachers reject and/or defend against the use of electronic technology with their classes. My focus is predominently higher education, but I am interested in faculty resistance to E-learning at any level. (Please consider this a stimulus article.)

Study Suggests Online Learning Can Break Down Barriers

Study Suggests Online Learning Can Break Down Barriers: "Online learning resources and mentoring programmes could boost the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds entering higher education, according to a pioneering Kingston University study. Measures like these could also improve undergraduates’ chances of getting a good degree. The Widening Access and Success research project has investigated how e-learning can encourage students from a more diverse range of backgrounds to apply for university as well as improving overall student success rates. Funded by Atlantic Philanthropies Research, the 340,000 project has taken three years to complete. "

When iPod goes collegiate | csmonitor.com

When iPod goes collegiate | csmonitor.com: "There are many - faculty and students alike - who rave about the iPod's potential. But there are also a considerable number who scratch their heads and say that the excitement over use of the device in classrooms reminds them of the fable of the emperor's new (and nonexistent) clothes. At Duke, the school's internal review of the success of the iPod's first foray into academics indicated mixed results. On the one hand, about 75 percent of freshmen surveyed said they used the iPods for their academic work. Half the time, they said, they used them in ways recommended by professors, but for the rest they devised uses of their own."

M-Learning Here: Landscape for Future, in EDUCAUSE REVIEW | May/June 2005,

EDUCAUSE REVIEW | May/June 2005, Volume 40, Number 3: "Penny Wilson has described mobile wireless devices—such as cell phones, handhelds, and notebook computers—as “tools of mass disruption” that are going to help spark a period of innovation for learning technology stakeholders of all kinds.20 The success of mobile learning will ultimately revolve around a mosaic of rich converged experiences. These experiences will rest, in turn, on a foundation of converged network and device technologies, wireless services, rights management, content management, search management, and transactional processing power. Successful mobile learning will demand a rich presentation layer that runs efficiently on a variety of platforms and a variety of form factors. Effective mobile learning programs will require new digital communication skills, new pedagogies, and new practices. " Article includes AMobile and Wireless Technology Lexicon.

Constructing Cultures in DE

ITFORUM Paper 4: "The ideas presented in this paper lead to several conclusions. While culture is usually thought to develop over time without much conscious attention, the rapid growth in use of distance education technologies means that a more rapid and deliberate development of cultures is needed. Because there are multiple cultures in distance education, the strengths and weaknesses of different technologies and the differing purposes of interactions make it impossible for one set of mores to fit all situations. As teachers of teachers and of future teachers, we have the opportunity to help create useful cultures by using distance technologies in the classes we teach. By modeling appropriate conventions and making explicit what those conventions are, we are preparing teachers to create useful cultures with their own students. A teacher who wishes to have a useful, comfortable climate for interaction and learning will do well to remember that all culture is created by group negotiation and not by authority's fiat. Such a teacher will devote learning time to group interaction around issues of culture building, knowing the issues that are at stake but giving participants room to negotiate the conventions that will best accomplish the purposes for which the group is formed."

Colleges must adapt to technological advances and student demand -- timesunion.com

Colleges must adapt to technological advances and student demand -- timesunion.com "The coincidence of a revolution in information technology, growing economic demands for knowledge professionals and the pressure on public universities to become financially self-sufficient is altering the face of higher education as we know it. While some higher education institutions use turnover at the top to make short-term adjustments, their long-term health will more likely depend on their ability to come to terms with long-term trends that are slowly but surely changing the American higher education landscape: Higher education's center of gravity is shifting from liberal arts undergraduate education to returning adult professional education. Declining birth rates, increasing life expectancy and increased need for knowledge updates mean that more adults will return for more academic "refueling stops'' over a longer life span."

Best Practices: A Triangulated Support Approach in Transitioning Faculty to Online Teaching

Best Practices: A Triangulated Support Approach in Transitioning Faculty to Online TeachingThe English department at North Carolina State University faced a rapid, large-scale transition of a number of its professional writing courses from traditional classes to online courses. Recognizing that numerous barriers, including unresolved administrative issues, faculty resistance, and lack of training could impede this process, administrators and faculty members collaborated to ensure that appropriate resources, peer support, and adequate professional development were available for the success of this endeavor. This transition became an opportunity for professional development activities and for carefully orchestrated administrative and peer support. As a result, twenty of forty-two professional writing classes were delivered online in the fall of 2004, and twenty of forty classes are being delivered in spring 2005.

USATODAY.com - Study shows some teens not as Web-savvy as parents A recent (rather unscientific) industry study shows that the 'Net Gen' may not be inclusive of many (some?) teens when it comes to navigating the Web. It is hypothesized that immaturity and poor reading skills may be the reason for this . . .the USA Today article does indicate that other teens are Web savvy and live up to the stereotype of Net Gen'ers.

ERIC - Education Distance Education Digest

ERIC - Education Resources Information Center: " This digest explores media options as they relate to instructional design for distance education, because the function and design of each medium needs to be understood, if it is to lead to learning. It also describes other types of delivery media used in the history of distance learning before online learning programs: print, radio and telephone, audiotapes, and television. This digest examines how the computer has changed traditional offerings of distance education. The process of selecting appropriate media for learning at a distance and the emerging trend of the hybrid approach to teaching and learning at a distance and discusses common designs of hybrid courses are also described. The digest concludes with special considerations for distance learning: (1) determine your primary delivery approach (online or hybrid); (2) review the course outline to determine where media can be used to facilitate learning; (3) ascertain availability of student access to the media selected; and (4) locate appropriate resources to fit your objectives or plan to create them. Finally, a short list of Web resources on distance learning media is presented. (AEF)"

AdjunctMatch - Projects - WCET

AdjunctMatch, a new online service under development by WCET, will help institutions with e-learning position openings and instructors with e-learning expertise find one another more quickly. Institutions and adjuncts will now have a one-stop site for finding the best match for their needs. For some institutions, this may mean hiring an instructor with a unique expertise to teach from a location thousands of miles from campus. For some place-bound instructors, it may provide a way to keep teaching when enrollment at their local campus declines.
